Osteochondral lesions
(Cartilage damage of the ankle)
In some types of acute injuries, or with an unstable ankle over time, there can be areas of the ankle joint which get damaged and lead to loose bits of cartilage or bone within the joint. This can, if left unaddressed progress to severe ankle arthritis and be quite painful.
Apart from clinical examination, Xrays, MRI scans and CT scans may be required as part of diagnostic work up and surgical planning.

Treatment options:
Non operative treatment
Optimising general health, weight loss and smoking cessation will assist
Avoiding heavy repetitive impact activities such as long distance running on hard surfaces
Avoiding further trauma to the ankle
Operative treatment aims to address the underlying causes of the defect and prevent further recurrence. This will be recommended where appropriate.
